Ainley Top Area & Ogden to home

We took She's dad, Ken, to Wyevale Garden Centre near Ainley Top, for lunch.
Afterwards I had a look in the small copse nearby, while Sue and Ken looked around the centre.

An interesting area ,this, with lots of small, tightly packed trees and bushes.

Birds:-

4 Bullfinch, Jay, Blackcap (singing not seen).
Lots of Robins and Tit species.

Ogden to home: 14:45 - 16:45

WINDY!!

Sue dropped me at Ogden on the way home.
I had a change of route at Ogden, opting for the woodland.
I went up the main track towards Withens, then took the second stile on the right into the woods.

A bird landed on a distant fence post.

It caught my attention because of the way the bird settled on the post, was not very 'crow like'.
The bird looked like a large Ring Ouzel, but I think it must be a Corvid.
I think It's too big for M. Ring Ouzel?
Anybody like to comment?

This scrubby area looks good for Redstart to me, but maybe Ogden is at too high an elevation for Redstart?

Anyway, a few Chaffinch were feeding on the ground here with a few Long Tailed Tit flitting about.

The woodland walk was very disappointing really, with not a lot else seen.

I Toyed with the idea of looking at the Giant's Tooth area for Spotted Flycatcher but decided it was a bit too early in the year, and too windy up there.

The water held a Lesser Black-backed Gull and a Herring Gull.
A couple of Canada Geese and the Mallards were about it!

The homeward route via Back Lane, Ogden and  the farm track near Ned Hill Road bottom didn't produce much either.

Kestrel,Pheasant, Curlew and a calling Green Woodpecker, miles off, were about it.

(A Little Owl was seen along the way, which brightened a dull do).

Ogden to Home:-

Corvid or not?

Too distant for the cropped version to add much detail

  1. Hi John - have been puzzling over the bird with the white collar ....Thinking corvid now after a second look as a Blackbird sized bird would, I suspect, look much smaller on the fence posts.
Redstart and Tree Pipit are still possible at Ogden - but whether they would stay to breed is another matter. (?)

  2. Thanks Dave.
The photo is poor at distance, so one that got away.
Still think that Redstart is possible up the Withens' track area.
Tree Pipit will arrive next week - with the heat wave!
