The Wirral Area – Burton Mere Wetlands

Tuesday 14th May 2019

Another sunny, hot day and a visit to Burton Mere Wetlands.
Mustn't  complain but the glare and direction of the sun was making birds a tad difficult to photo and identify.

An afternoon visit here today.

There are Cattle Egret and Spoonbill breeding here, high in distant trees.
Also Great White Egret.
We did glimpse Heron and Little Egret in the same nesting area but we dipped on the main sp.
But it is possible that one of my very distant photos of an Egret in flight, is that of a Great White.

Med. Gull are also breeding here, on a distant island – too distant to see today though.

Lots of birds heard, but not many Warblers seen.

Cettis Warbler, Reed Warbler and Sedge Warbler were all singing but apart from a glimpse of a Reed Warbler the others remained hidden.

Avocet have young chicks with them at the moment.
They look very venerable, running around the water's edge.

Other Birds:

Heron, Many Breeding Black Headed Gull, Tufted Duck, Shoveler, Little Ringed Plover,
Gadwall, Oystercatcher, Little Grebe, Whitethroat, Blackcap, Black Tailed Godwit.

And a few other sp.

Little Egret

Elusive Whitethroat

Possibly a Great White Egret.
Large Neck Pouch.
Difficult to judge the size of the bird at this distance.
And the photo is pretty horrible.

Another big white bird.
But not found in Collins.

Avocet Chick.
