St Annes : Filey & Scarborough

After looking at the weather all week - we plumped for the West Coast for our holiday with Abigail and Emma.

We took Abigail and Emma on holiday for a few days to St. Annes.
We stayed on a campsite in Lytham.
I had an hour each day with the camera but the sea was mega distant and the weather cold, very dull but dry.

After the holiday we dropped the girls off at Sowerby Bridge and Heckmondwike and headed off into the evening mist towards Scarborough, but ended up at Muston, Filey.

Birds:

St. Annes - Promenade, beach and dunes.

Shelduck, Redshank, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Herring Gull, Tufted Duck, Oystercatcher, Linnet.

Near the campsite the fields were flooded and there was a large drainage channel running through the fields.
Here, late evening, I got very lucky.

2 Buzzards were seen in the gloom with a possible Marsh Harrier overhead.

Then a Barn Owl appeared, hunting over the fields nearby as I stood on the road watching.
As the light disappeared, the Barn Owl flew within 3 feet of my bonce along the drain and then landed on a fence post.
I was pleased with the photo of the bird, taken hand held in the dark, with ISO of 3,200.

There was no access to the fields here, where large flocks of Wildfowl could be seen, very far off.
Too far off for me to ID alas.

Also here: Shelduck, Shoveler, Cormorant, Little Egret, Meadow Pipit, Black Headed Gull.

Filey:

The weather on Friday was a tad grim but improved slightly as the day progressed.
The tide was just starting to ebb so there was no access to Filey Brigg.
We chose the higher path along the cliffs toward the brigg.
The brigg itself was devoid of birds, except for one large gull that I can't ID and a few Cormorants flying by.

The cliff top route found 'hawk eye' Sue on top form - spotting a solitary Puffin under a shelf on the cliff, 200 yds from the Brigg.

Also here:

Kittiwake, Fulmar, Oystercatcher, Meadow Pipit, Herring Gull, Stock Dove.

Scarborough:

Saturday 14th April dawned with blue skies and the nasty fog gone.
A Tree Sparrow was seen from Filey car park before we had a bus ride into Scarborough. and after some shopping had a good walk about.

The north end cliffs revealed a Peregrine and the large sea defence boulders a Rock Pipit.
Large numbers of Kittiwake were on the sea.
Turnstones were on the harbour walls.
Two birds had rings , one with Red and Green rings and one with Red and Silver.
Great Black-backed Gull and Cormorant were seen also.

A Great Spotted Woodpecker was seen on the walk back to the Filey campsite.

Redshank?

Redshank I believe.
(Though it was a Purple Sandpiper at first, but legs are too long and wrong colour)
