√Birdcage Hill Woods

10:15 - 11:40

Another day, another Lesser Pecker hunt.
It was another dull misty drizzly day but very mild compared to recent days.

I had an hour and a half in the woods by Birdcage Hill.
It was extremely dark in the woods with plenty of birds moving and calling but they were difficult to pick out.

No Lesser Pecker and one Great Spotted Woodpecker heard with a second one seen for the briefest of moments.
No pics of either Woodpecker which is always a disappointment.

It was pleasing to hear a Song Thrush singing far off.
There was the usual plethora of Squirrels.
One was poking it's head out of a very small hole in a tree.

Other birds:-

6 Jay, c10 Long Tailed Tit, 3 Nuthatch.
Well over 100 Woodpigeon feeding on the woodland floor then rising it groups of 30 (ish) with a loud clatter into the trees.

The usual small passerines were here with lots of Blue and Great Tits, Chaffinch and a few Coal Tits and Robins.

Some bird seed had been placed on a tree stump, this allowed me to get a few pics at least.

I was a tad disappointed with today's effort.

It was difficult to pick out the birds from the dark tree canopy and this , with no leaves present!!

God help me when spring and the leaves come along.

As we passed Raggalds Flood at 14:00 it was just possible to see the water through the dense fog - yuk.

The dense fog that was here when we arrived home, has miraculously lifted.
