11:00 – 17:00
3 Busses to get to Heptonsall - so a later start - 11.00 am.
Birds seen on the hike:-
Arriving at Hardcastle Crags a Dipper was feeding on the
stream near the car park.
Climbing to Pecket Well a Jay was calling.
Pecket Well – Curlew calling.
Approaching Midgley Moor at Bog Eggs a pair of Oystercatcher
calling and > N. a beautiful sight (my first Oyks on ‘home - ish’ soil).
Further along 2 Curlew and a Red Grouse (calling).
At Mount Skip a Red Grouse on the wall before the golf
course calling “I will I will” or so it seemed to me.
All along Midgley Moor Lapwing were in abundance. I
counted 13 in all (2 having a punch-up!).
Also on Midgley Moor a superb silhouette against a clear blue
sky of a Raven soaring ‘Buzzard like’ with its wedge shaped tail in clear view. Also Skylark.
Arriving at ‘Churn Milk Joan’ another Red Grouse
sat behind the stone pillar. Also Meadow Pipit.
The next few miles were eerily quiet until Luddenden Dean
where Curlew and Lapwing could be heard.
At Jerusalem Farm 4 LTT, Robin a calling Jay and Male Pheasant
made appearances.
Warley Moor near Wainstalls was quiet with Meadow Pipit
and Male Pheasant.
The field nr. the small res. nr. Wainstalls had 17 Canada
Goose.
On the approach to Hunter Hill a Green Woodpecker call
could be heard from a long distance and the bird was still calling from a tree
on our left as we began the descent into Brockholes – didn’t eyeball it though
(and too fatigued to linger by then).
Tea at the Moorlands (excellent as usual) and then a
trudge home to Bradshaw where the evening has turned decidedly nippy.
A hard walk but the Oyks made my day.
