Soil Hill / Staveley - Knaresborough

Soil Hill.

I’d just got in from a few days at Knaresborough when I received a txt from NK re: SH Ring Ouzel.
Although I was a bit pooped I got Sue to drop me at SH. I trekked up the main path past the mast and at the end of the track went right with the wall footpath towards the Perseverance Road wall stile entrance – nothing doing.

(Except in the penultimate field – the horse field – a ram came trundling down the hill towards me. I thought it would stop but it thought it would carry on and on and on. I was not sure if it wanted a chat but it seemed intent on knocking me for 6 so I ‘jumped’ the wall into the next field. - not a pleasant sight)

Retracing my steps towards SH I arrived at the last stile before SH track when I got a fleeting glance of a Ring Ozle’s behind as it shot off down the ‘north’ field.
Soon after it was nice to meet Adrian and DP on the same hunt.
I loitered around for another 30 mins or so but no sign. As I left 3 more ‘oozlers’ were coming up the SH track. I hope they had more luck than me – looking at the size of the scopes I guess they would!

  1. Some good birds there, Tree Sparrow, Gadwall. The Ram snubbed DW and myself this morning (10/04) we aren't worth it expending energy I guess.

  2. Cheers Nigel,
They don't compare to a Ring Ouzel on sh. Maybe it's the effort that makes sh sightings special.
The ram knows two hard knocks when it sees them or maybe I looked like a farmer or worse still a ewe!
