9:30.
The usual walk today with a good hour and
half patrolling Soil Hill top area and Ned Hill Track. After dropping some Twite
seed I had a mosey on the contour footpath.
Nice to bump into Geoff from Thornton who was up there having the
same luck as me. No Ring Ouzel (although I stuck to the main path and would be
lucky to spot any from there) or Wheatear but lots of Meadow Pipit and Syklark
in good voice.
Curlew were calling and there were a couple of Woodpigeon and 2
Swallow about. On my second circuit I flushed a pair of Grey Partridge - got
the bins on them at last.
A couple of Kestrel were up and about and a solitary Lapwing.
Leaving the hill via Ned Hill Track I
heard a garbled song coming from the bushes behind Pottery Cottage and managed
to get the bins on a M. Blackcap, alas in soon flew higher up the hill low into
the bushes there and out of sight, so no photo.
I did take a video of the location in the
bush , however, the sound is poor and the song indistinct.
There were a couple of Pheasant here also.
Coal Lane held a Pied Wagtail and the
track via the plantation to Ogden was disappointing, with nothing to report.
12:30 Ogden
After a butty stop I continued to Ogden
Water.
The water was deserted with a capital D, just 3 Canada Goose and
Mallard about.
The trees, however, were full of singing
Willow Warbler with a good smattering of singing Chiffchaff.
Curlew could be heard calling from the
moor.
I left Ogden via Boggart Brig and the
Moorlands car park. Crossing the field here, there were several Meadow Pipit
and possibly a Tree Pipit and a Pheasant. Although I guess it’s too early for
Tree Pipit?
I took a different route from normal today, following the path to
the right at the bottom of Ned Hill Road. This track goes through a few farms
before joining the bridleway opposite my house. I normally turn up something (usually
Green Woodpecker) on this track but today there was nothing to report.
For the first time in my life, I've kept a species list and I've managed exactly 100 species today since the 1st January 2015 (not all local I hasten to add).
I don't know if that's good bad or indifferent though!!
Thanks Brian for you help with the I.D. of some of them.

Home again and time for football in the
park with granddaughter Abigail.
A bit of spring colour below Soil Hill
101 with the Tree pipit John , well spotted.
ReplyDeleteSome birders are round 100 on their local list now.
Gordon Denison used to set a target for 100 local birds in 100 days which has just gone.
Magic - thanks for the info.
ReplyDeleteNot a bad day out for both of us Bri.
