Home Time - Easter Break Tuesday – Hollingworth Lake, Soil Hill & Ogden

Hollingworth Lake.

We enjoyed a final stroll around this morning through some of the farms near the lake.

Birds:-

Great Crested Grebe, Canada Goose on a nest, Coot, Grey Heron, Pied Wagtail, Coal Tit investigating a nest site.

Soil Hill – 15:45 – 17:00

After settling in at home I decided to try Soil Hill for Wheatear and Ogden for whatever.
It was a bit breezy on the tops but quite pleasant. After dropping a bit of Mallard Grub on the track I had a good look around but produced no Wheatear. The usual small birds were about on the way up. On the top there were 3 Lapwing, 5 or so Skylark, 12 Meadow Pipit, and a very active Kestrel looking to nab a Meadow Pipit by the looks of it.

Ogden Woodland 17:00 – 18:00

At Syke Lane Cottages a very vociferous Coal Tit was in the conifer there & Sue rang to say she’d been delayed and she would pick me up nearer 19:00 was it OK? That fit in well with my plan!
I went up back lane bridleway and turned diagonally right to reach the Ogden wood boundary wall. Here I turned right and had a lovely surprise when I spotted a Green Woodpecker on a Grassy Mound near the marker post V5. This was my bogey bird this year. The bird was in silhouette so the pictures are poor. I remained with the wall and followed it to its demise before crossing the fence into the wood and retracing my steps this time in the trees.
A quick tour of the reservoir and a lift home followed.
A fly over of 30 Mallard as I left via Boggart Brig and a mystery bird > N as I sat on the wall by the Golf Club Road.

Birds:-

Green Woodpecker, 4 Meadow Pipit, Curlew calling, Red Grouse calling,3 Nuthatch.

Ogden Water 18:00 – 18:40

The water was quiet with 16 Canada Goose, Mallard, Tufted Duck and Barney  with Goldcrest calling from the Xmas tree fence.

  1. I,d go for Sparrowhawk. Wheatears reported today, just to the Oxenhope side of Fly Flatts so we should get them in the next few days.

  2. I thought it was a type of duck but the picture is rubbish.
The Wheatears seem to be popping up in a few spots so S.H. should see one soon.
I've got them on the Ned Hill Track wall before today.
