After a visit to White Windows home, Sowerby Bridge,
Sue decided that she would like to have a walk around Hollingworth Lake this
morning.
It was cold and very windy around the lakeside
today and the weather turned decidedly unpleasant later on with heavy rain
accompanying us on our drive home.
We also had a scan at the ponds at Peanock Farm,
accessed via a path that runs south west from the south end of Hollingworth
Lake.
The ponds usually hold quite a bit of wildfowl but
today there were just 5 Teal and a Heron.
The fields beside the pond held a huge flock of
Starlings also.
Back at the lake the feeding area was brimming with small gulls,
Mallards and Canada Geese as usual.
Further on from the feeding area a ‘young’ LBBG had “caught”
what looked to me like a small twig and it was flying high into the air and
dropping the ‘twig’ into the water. It did this several times as we walked
along.
I presume the gull thought it had caught some sort of shellfish and it
was trying to break it open.
The gull was possibly still learning the technique
and maybe should have been dropping the catch onto solid ground?
Birds (Lake):-
6 Cormorant, M & F Goosander, Pr. Teal, 3 Great
Crested Grebe, Coot, 13 Lapwing flyover, 2 Mistle Thrush, Pied Wagtail, Small Gulls, Canada Goose, Mallard, LBBG. Robin, Starling.
You spotted a lot more birds than I usually get at Hollingworth.
