We had a run out to Grasssington this morning and we
were pleasantly surprised to find the Grassington Festival was in full flow.
A short walk upstream along the River Wharfe, from
Linton Falls, was very enjoyable with warm-ish and fair-ish weather for the
most part.
2 young Pheasants were on the walls on the way down
to the falls.
Looking downstream from the bridge a F. Goosander
was with 6 young.
Grey Wagtails were in abundance with possibly as
many as 10 seen - I checked for Yellow Wag. but no joy. There was a few of Pied Wagtail also.
Nearing the road bridge there were 50+ Black Headed
Gull, c10 Sand Martin, a single House Martin, and a couple of Mute Swan.
A Common Sandpiper flew past and it (or another) was
seen later on in the walk.
A couple of Oystercatcher flew past and 2 were seen
resting on rocks in the river later on.
The bird of the outing was Great Spotted Woodpecker
with at least 5 seen (3 Adult birds and 2 juv.).
On the return journey a single Lesser Black-backed
Gull and a Moorhen were on the rocks by the river bridge and a family of busy
Wren and a Song Thrush were by the kissing gate as we made our exit onto the road there.
A Curlew was in the fields as we drove home.
Grassington Square was very busy with a cooking demo
by Keelham Farm Shop (they have a new shop at Skipton) and a good few food
stalls and a band playing.
Goosander with unid top right?
