I had an hour's opportunity for a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker hunt today.
A lady at Coach Road informed me, last year, that the LSW liked ivy clad oak trees - so this is a good place to start looking I guess.
With Sue visiting her dad at Ing Royde I manged to slope off down to the woods on either side of Birdcage Hill (Scarr Wood and Long Wood I think they are called).
It's amazing how fast an hour passes, I could have well managed another hour or two hunting.
There was plenty of fleeting bird life here today but pictures seemed very hard to come by.
(There were at least 15 Grey Squirrels seen here).
It was another dull and damp afternoon's outing but at least the worst of the weather saved itself for the drive home.
Birds:
Kestrel, Wren, Blue Tit, Chaffinch, 2 Stock Dove, c40 Woodpigeon, 5 Jay, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker.
Cormorant overhead, Great Tit.
Nuthtch (calling - not seen - I usually see a few Nuthach here but not today).
A very peripatetic Treecreeper.
Pool/Snooker tonight - hope I do better than last week!!
Ideal habitat for a Lesser Pecker
Spot the Treecreeper
I've never been down there John I'll have to give it a try, but might wait until the weather stops being so gloomy.
ReplyDeleteGreat place, but very dark even with no leaves on the trees.
ReplyDeleteBetter on the edges where there is good light.
Good luck - worth a punt for Woodpecker.
John
Looking for the LSW as I've never seen one, don't think I'll bother today though with these gale force winds.
ReplyDeleteWell done for giving the 'lesser pecker' a go John. Cracking birds and hard to find even when they are there. If you don't look then it's a blank every time!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteCheers Dave.
ReplyDeleteI know I'll find one - just got to live long enough (and keep looking).
