An excellent hike with lots of birds

16:05 - 19:30

A good leg stretcher and plenty of birds, late afternoon and early evening.

Sue needed some cooking apples to make some chutney and she dropped me at Foreside Lane near the Farm Shop.

I walked up Foreside Lane. left across the fields to the parallel bridleway, up here a bit then left through a kissing gate.

The path crosses a few fields to arrive high up on Back Lane ,Ogden.
The usual return, after a circuit of a quiet reservoir, via Soil Hill to home.

Birds: Foreside Lane - Ogden.

Lapwing, 5 Curlew, Oystercatcher, 4 Wheatear, 4 Meadow Pipit, 3 Pheasant.

A fantastic display by a Snipe.
It took a while for the penny to drop - I was looking for the bird in the fields, when all along the buzzing was overhead- DOH.

A lengthy display with a zig-zag flight eventually culminating in a plummet earthwards to land within 10 yards of me - still could not pick out the bird in the reeds though - amazing.

Also Snipe were chipping hereabouts.

Skylark, Mistle Thrush with, what I thought at the time was a juv. in tow.
Looking at the photos, I think the bird is an adult.

Kestrel hunting far off, Swallow, Green Woodpecker calling.

Birds: Ogden to Home.

Green Woodpecker calling, 2 Song Thrush.
A stonking very Green Woodpecker flew past to land high in a conifer.
Chaffinch, Wren, Long Tailed Tit, Coal Tit, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Chiffchaff, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 6 Singing Willow Warbler, 19 Canada Geese, Mallard, Oystercatcher > N, 6 Pheasant, Curlew Calling, 2 Stock Dove, Meadow Pipit, Goldfinch, Dunnock.
Unid Gull overhead.
Skylark, Red Grouse.

It was the day of the calling Green Woodpecker, with yet another one calling, off and on, as I went down Taylor Lane and it was still calling as I arrived home.

A calm quiet day, so it is probable that the Green Woodpecker calls
would carry a long way.

A brown hare seen along the way also.

A great day out.

Displaying Snipe

Behaved like a Juv. but I think it is an adult bird - too early??

Don't remember taking this photo!
