We enjoyed a couple of days as Cleethorpes this week.
I went birding Tuesday evening along by the Humberston / Fitties beach area and I was fortunate to bump into an RSPB warden along the same patch.
We enjoyed a good chat as darkness fell and Waders came in.
He told me that Tuesdays' tide was exceptionally high and that was why he had picked this section of the beach to scan.
The tide was very high across the estuary at Spurn Point and Waders were roosting here because of the lack of mud etc. at Spurn.
We had not been chatting long before darkness fell alas.
In the short period before darkness fell, Knott appeared in huge numbers - to huge for me to estimate.
Also here were Sanderling, Black Tailed Godwit.
Golden Plover, Grey Plover, Ringed Plover.
(poss. Little Ringed Plover but I will have to check out my distant photos).
Dunlin.
Redshank.
Curlew.
Oystercatcher.
Little Egret.
10 Very distant Shelduck in flight.
1st Year Mute Swan in flight.
and ,no doubt, a few others too distant for me to ID.
Large flocks of Starling, Barnacle Geese and Greylag Geese were near the ponds / park area.
As is usual the birds keep well out on the muddy areas so the pictures are poor.
The one that got away.
A possible sighting of a Osprey late Wednesday evening,
high over the sports centre.
I mistook it for a large Gull ,until the penny dropped, by then it was too distant for a photo alas.
Scam:
I had a telephone call from 'BT' (allegedly) this afternoon, telling me my broadband was 'up the spout'.
The caller sounded as if she was in Timbuktu land so I hung up.
After checking the number with 1471 I contacted BT and …. you guessed it some kind soul was trying to remove my meagre bottle of Florins from the mantle piece or the modern day equivalent.
Result:
Old Grey Haired Gullible Baldie Bloke 1
- Scammers (St)Inc: 0
?? Top Left!
(Grey Plover I think)
Night, Night
Done well there, great sight to see all those waders. Bar-tailed Godwits as well John - photo 19 showing the white wedge up the lower back.
ReplyDeleteHi Dave,
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking the time to look at the photos and for pointing out the Bar-tailed Godwit.
I'm beginning to realise the importance of getting photos of Waders in flight as well as on the ground.(It's taken a while for the penny to drop).
Even so, at that distance I struggle to ID them!
The whole spit of Sand/Mud was completely covered in Waders.
Many 100's of Knot and Golden Plover, a fantastic sight late into the evening.
