Soil Hill in the Murk

I was in two minds whether to go up to soil hill, with thick mist at home one minute and some sunshine the next.

Anyway, I opted to have a look around up there and spent 2 hours trying in vain to get another 'tick' in the shape of a Tawny Owl.

There was the odd brighter interlude but it was mostly very dull and misty.

Good to have a chat to Julia and Will who were walking along Percy Rd with binoculars at the ready.

Birds:

A small flock of Fieldfare and Starling were flying about the reservoir field, in and out of the mist.

A few Meadow Pipit along the main track.

A good trek about had a few 'moments'.

A Large Gull passing , high, in the mist, with an odd call, needs some further investigation, but it is probably a Herring Gull.

A Pheasant and a Heron were hereabouts.

9 Black Headed Gull over.

1 pretty Stonechat was along the west side heather plants.

A one note high pitched loud call, heard just twice, from a bird (not seen) in the mist, flying down towards the shay fields, was a call I did not recognise.

I turned the camera video on to see if I could record the call but the bird did not call again.

I then tried to replicate the call with my astounding whistling skills - see what you think .... ok its pretty rubbish!

A Pied Wagtail was on the Taylor Lane midden with a Pheasant.

Little Owls were calling east of Bradshaw Lane as I walked home.

Looks like more fog tomorrow.

Whistling Jack Smith (I'm not)!

  1. Some atmospheric shots there John !! Not a Golden Plover ? or even Kingfisher call (just guessing !!!)?? Percy Edwards was a perfectionist at bird calls. Good do to get out in the conditions- I locked myself down today.

  2. Very loud...not kingfisher but could be Golden Plover although I listened to GPver on my phone just after hearing the call on the hill.
The Golden Plover call sounded similar but louder and lasted a bit longer.
