Wainstalls to Cold Edge Dams and back

The promised sunshine was off school again today , some low misty cloudy stuff turned up in its place.

Another chilly outing but very enjoyable nonetheless.

I parked at the junction of Withens Road and Castle Carr Road and walked down the road about 400 yds before taking a stile on the right onto a great path that follows the stream unerringly to the dams.

A cracking path with just a bit of boggy stuff to contend with.

It was good to chat to Richard up there, a warder at St. Aidens.

The hoped for Ringoes and Wheatabix (Dave) failed to materialise despite prolong gawping by me.

Birds were active throughout keeping the interest going.

Birds:-

Curlew calling frequently with a couple seen.

6 or so Greenfinch.

c7 Meadow Pipits in ones and twos.

2 Snipe flushed from the boggy bit half way up the moorland path.

Another Snipe flushed, later, from the a bog at the side of Castle Carr Road.

A Heron left in a hurry as I put my head above the dam horizon.

3 Canada Geese, 6 Mallard and a Pr. Tufted Duck were on the dams with a Pied Wagtail on the edge.

1 Black Headed Gull.

3 Buzzard. ( 2 were way distant west, the 3rd was on a telegraph pole).

A Raven passed overhead.

Lapwing calling and darting about.

2 Red Grouse (1 heard, 1 seen).

Pr. Stonechat were on the fence by the road.

Pr. Pheasant.

Green Woodpecker calling.

2 'possibles' but no photos and only a very quick sighting:-

c12 birds airborne  immediately obscured by the hillside were possibly Golden Plover.

A 'possible' Reed Bunting flushed from the roadside reeds but flew a long way away - boohoo.

Lots of Frogs and Frogspawn in the top dam drain.

Is it a bird or is it a plane

There's a Snipe in this photo

Ah! there it is.
