St. Patrick’s day ramble: Bradshaw – West Scholes – Thornton – Well Heads – Doe Park res. – Hewenden Viaduct – Hallas Bridge – Harden.

10:00 - 14:00.

A dull damp cool morning brought a hike to Stephen Smith’s garden centre and a well earned bacon sarnie.

Bit disappointed with the bird life but we did not have time to dawdle and only the small camera with me today.

West Scholes: Pied Wagtail : Mistle Thrush.

Thornton: Jay : Green Woodpecker calling.

Doe Park: Solitary Coot: Canada Goose: Kestrel: Wren

Hallas Bridge AreaDipper:Pr Bullfinch: Goldfinch: Jay: Heron making an awful racket.

Hewenden Res.: Jay. Cormorant drying its wings.

Harden Area: GSW calling. F. Pheasant ran half way across a field then crouched down and disappeared – good camouflage.

Greenfinch were calling throughout the day.

3 buses to get home – home 17:00.

  1. Not a bad report John, you must have been saving up to afford a bacon banjo at Stephen Smiths.

  2. £3.99 Brian, but you do get a bit of rabbit jock as well.
After the hike I guess I'd have paid a fiver!

  4. Hi Danny,
It was about 8 miles with many an up and down
I always enjoy Stephen Smith's they give you extra hot water with the tea and I'm normally very thirsty when I get there.
