Today’s trudge on a windy, cloudy but improving day
saw us catch the bus from Bradshaw to Queensbury Golf Club and walk to Baliff Bridge.
Another test for Sue's foot - she's overtaking me for stamina now - mind you she is 3 years younger!
We followed quite a few lanes with the field paths
being very boggy.
12:15.
The route followed the main road towards Brighouse
taking the first left on High Cross Lane – Pepper Hill – Cock Hill – Cock Hill
Lane and finally Shelf Hall Lane. At Shelf Hall Lane we followed the Calderdale
Way signpost to go through Shelf to the main road and down Bridle Stile Lane (We
followed The Calderdale Way all the way to Baliff Bridge). The path continues down
from Bridle Stile on a lovely lane that
terminates at a house. Here you turn left over a wall stile and down to the
stream where a new looking wooden bridge takes you across and you follow the
path on the other side (very boggy) to rise towards a Pylon before joining a
path by a wall. We sheltered here behind some holly bushes and shared a sarnie.
The path emerges at Norwood Green and
turns left to pass the Olde White Beare Inn before turning right passing the cricket club and crossing the railway line (very boggy here also). The
path heads down to cross the A58 and goes to the right of the Garden Centre,
down the fields to arrive at the new housing by the stream at Baliff Bridge.
We were quite lucky with the bus times from Baliff
Bridge to Halifax and home to Bradshaw.
Birds:-
Nothing to write home about I’m afraid.
I was sure I would have seen some Common Snipe today but although I scanned the boggy
fields near the trailer park area nothing doing.
Pepper Hill area 4 Mistle Thrush, Greenfinch and a
few Goldfinch.
Plenty of Starling throughout the day in the tree
tops.
Bridle Stile Lane was ‘Pick of the Pops’ with 34 Redwing
on the football field and with quite a few others in the trees there.
C10 Woodpigen and 5 Magpie in one field 200
yds lower down.
A pr. of Geese far off - Canadas by the look of the photo.
A couple of Goldfinch flew from a tree top and a Kestrel was
perched high in a tree before it took shelter on a pylon.
Going through Norwood Green a Chaffinch and behind
the Olde White Beare Inn a pr. Of Jay.
By the railway line a Wren, Kestrel and the faint
call of a Bullfinch.
No Woodpeckers heard drumming or seen again today?
Spot the Mistle Thrush
Towards Norwood Green
Evidence of Woodpecker - but none about
