St. Peter's Avenue - Sowerby Bridge
I had an hours walk about up St Peter's Avenue yesterday hoping for a Brambling (I was fortunate to photo one last year, here, on 1st February).
No luck today with the Brambling just loads of Starling and Gulls about.
Bradshaw - Soil Hill
11:20 - 13:00.
Another day, another Snow Bunting hunt.
I took a walk up and around Soil Hill late
morning, dropped some birdseed and had a 45 minute tour.
There is a lot of snow up here yet, with only a
few clear patches, so I guess this isn't helping the birding situation.
The hill was bereft of Snow Bunting.
A Wren was in the wall opposite the comms. mast.
There was one hardy Skylark singing when I
arrived and I did espy a second one later on.
A couple of Carrion Crow were hanging
about and as I looked down towards Denholme Cricket field I thought I heard a faint Little Owl call, however a solitary, calling, Lapwing came into view negating
my Little Owl!!
20 Small Gulls were airborne over Ogden
and a Robin was in the hedge near the white cottage on Perseverance Road and a
Pied Wagtail was on the buildings at Laverrock Hall Farm.
A second Wren was on the Koi Carp farm
wall.
A few small birds were seen on the way
home, and at the time, I thought I might have seen a couple of Herring Gull, one of which I managed a fairish picture of.
However looking at the photo, I now think they were Common Gull, because of the eye colour but ...................... my gull ID skills are rubbish.
I hope I'm not alone struggling with Gull Identification.
This must be the calm before the storm.
Thaw coming mid-week with Snow Bunt &
Wheatear on Soil Hill by next Thursday - or I'll eat my gloves!!
A few moody sky pics are also included looking South West from Bailiff Bridge top on the way home from Abigail's this evening.

Stodley Pike in the far distance
The main Snow bunting track
At last a bird to photograph - albeit miles away
Up, Up and away
I though I was going to blob with a Robin pic today.
Common Gull I believe.
Baliff Bridge:

Nice sky and snow scenes, hopefully the last of the latter although they are promising us a white Easter.
ReplyDeleteRight on the Common gull.
Cheers Bri.
ReplyDeleteSo short of something special to photo of late,I was hoping for Herring Gull.
I've never ID one in flight locally ( bit I bet I've seen plenty over the years)!!
John
Herring Gulls will gladly take your F and C at the seaside ! Inland they can be tricky at a distance. They don't usually stay without a decent active landfill site- we just get flyovers in winter mainly.
ReplyDeleteCheers Dave.
