I had an outing to look for Snow Bunting today...
Frequent snow showers today left a good covering of the white stuff on Soil Hill.
The walk through Bradshaw did produce a few birds:-
2 Mistle Thrush, Chaffinch, 2 Collard Dove, House Sparrow,Blackbird and Starling.
Taylor Lane fields , on the way up, held 3 Fieldfare.
On the way back down a Robin, Wren and a Blackbird were by the Midden.
Perseverance Road's Little Owl was low down on a wall and also on Perseverance Road, Dave B. was getting tackled up to deal with the snow.
A man with 2 Alsatians left the hill as we approached.
Dave and I had a walk along the main track and I dropped some bird seed on the walls/track.
We sheltered a while during a nasty snow flurry then had a walk over to the largest turbine, where I think I might get the Snow Bunt.
Another walker was on the hill here and went towards the farm nearby.
A look west from the turbine and guess what.... a third walker was there with his Alsatian running across the "east side" mounds.
It was busier than summer!
Needless to say our efforts produced a big fat zero.
The only birds I saw on/from the hill were 5 Magpie, 1 Carrion Crow and 2 Black Headed Gulls.
Leaving along Perseverance Road I had an interesting chat with Dan B. who was on his way up to the hill.
Bright sunshine forecast for tomorrow so I hope to check it out again in more favourable conditions.. watch this space.
You never know what you might see up here.
Today , not a lot tomorrow....... who knows.
That is the beauty of the place.
Apparently the existing quarry excavation is due to be filled in soon, and the area nearer the farm shop side is due to be excavated, so this will change the dynamics of the place.

Little Owl still there on my way home
Robin of the day
I'm thinking that there were 2 owls up there John as one was brown and the other grey, the one I seen diving was browny coloured but the one I saw later was grey, what do you think ?
ReplyDeleteThe main Little Owl pic on this blog, was taken on the return journey. The other 2 pics were taken just before I met with you on the way up to Soil Hill.
ReplyDeleteThey do look different but maybe its the difference in their stance.
I don't think I saw a grey coloured one?
(But have you seen the width of the lens in my specs!!).
