√Hirst Wood/Saltaire & Soil Hill

Hirst Wood/Saltaire

We enjoyed a walk through Hirst Wood along the river and canal into Saltaire this morning.

(On the way up the Bonnet 34 Lapwing were feeding in the fields with the Starling flock).

In Hirst Wood, 2 men were using leaf blowers to clear the path in the woods of leaves!! - is it me?

It was a beautiful crisp sunny morning with the temperature hovering just above freezing.

We also enjoyed a very interesting detour to Salts Mill after the obligatory cafe stop, in the bakery, of course.

(In a jewellery shop there, I though the tag on a small earring had a product code of 1050, until I realised that the code number was actually the price DOH!).

Birds:-

Lots of activity in the woods with Blue & Great Tit in abundance.

others:

Great Spotted Woodpecker, 4 Jay, 5 Nuthatch, Sparrowhawk, 3 Long Tailed Tit, Mallard, 6 Goosander, Bullfinch (heard but not seen), c20 Pied Wagtail, c100 small gulls, c200 Canada Geese , 2 Kingfisher. 6 Greylag Geese, Goldcrest, Goldfinch.
(no lesser pecker alas).

Soil Hill - Bradshaw

14:50 - 16:00

Sue dropped me at Soil Hill on the way home.

It was bright and sunny here but it dropped quite cold later on.

2 Magpie were on the main track and a Pheasant was nearby.

It was rewarding to get a Pr. Stonechat on a wall, to the west of the main track.

A Little Owl was on a field wall off Perseverance Road.

Blackbird, Dunnock and a second Little Owl was in the Taylor Lane area.
