√Soil Hill and Coley / Priestly Green Area

13:30 - 15:40

Soil Hill

The usual stroll this aft, up and around Soil Hill.
It was a pleasure to bump into and have a chat with Dan B. on Perseverance Road, who pointed out a distant Stock Dove.
There was a large Lapwing flock near the Raggalds.

A lovely sunny afternoon brought with it a few birds here.
Taylor Lane had a Little Owl sat on a fence post.
A pr. Kestrel were sharing an electricity pole but they soon fell out, with one quickly leaving the scene.

A Meadow Pipit was on a wall near the mast compound.
A Reed Bunting flushed from the East side and flew north, after 200 yds it was joined by a second bird, possibly a second Reed Bunt.

There were 6 ducks - miles away - on the lower NK pond.

4 Possibly were Teal but the pictures are very poor.

c15 Lapwing were feeding in the lower north end fields.

Just possible that there is a Golden Plover in with the Lapwing but the picture is poor at that distance.

A pr. Stonechat were on Ned Hill Track.

A Mistle Thrush was nearer home.

Not a bad outing on a lovely sunny day.

17:00 ...........We interupt this blog so Grandad John can play 'play your cards right' with Abigail........

Coley Church - Priestly Green - North Edge Lane.

9:45 - 12:15

I enjoyed a walk around Priestly Green area this morning.
It was very dull at home with a glimmer of brightness on the horizon as I looked down to Halifax.
I parked at Coley Church and the brightness soon arrived making it a lovely sunny morning for a walk.
2 Cormorants flew over > SE as I put my boots on.

I walked down the bridleway next to the church and took a right at the bottom. A left turn onto a bridleway, at the big 'White House', at Priestley Green led down towards the A58.

In the White House garden a Great Spotted Woodpecker was drumming - my first drummer of 2017 - I wasn't sure if 20 th January was a significant early date for a GSW to be heard drumming.

A Nuthatch was in the trees here with a Goldcrest.

A tad further down I took a left across the fields and was rewarded with a calling Buzzard which soon came into view.

Also here was a singing Song Thrush and a Jay.
A very large flock of Jackdaw were flying very high up and swooping up and down really enjoying themselves.

I retraced my steps and went up North Edge Lane.
Here again it was busy with birds with c10 Long Tailed Tit. 3 Fieldfare and a Mistle Thrush, and others seen.

No Lesser Pecker ..............YET.

  1. Could have been your Teal I got on Fly Flatts this p.m.
A good variety of birds. The two on the electric pole are both Kestrels.

  2. Thanks for that Bri.
I did wonder why a Sparrowhawk and a Kestrel would be so near one another, and thought they were both Kestrel at the time.
When I looked at the photo I saw a massive size difference betwwen the two and thought the larger bird was a Sparrowhawk - must be a trick of the light.
Tough going at Leeshaw of late.
It seems vey full these days as well.
    Good luck for the week-end.
