Birdcage Lane, Canal & River ..... Soil Hill Afternoon

10:05 - 12:15

Birdcage Lane Area

It was very foggy with heavy drizzle at Bradshaw this morning.
I had a trip out to the Birdcage Lane / Woodhouse Lane area with a stroll along the river and canal.

A very pleasant area, with good access to the river bank, making for some potential Grebes - but not today - I've yet to see a Grebe this year.

Birds:-

4 Singing Song Thrush, 5 Nuthatch, usual Blue & Great Tits.
2 Jay, 2 Grey Wagtail.

The river, by the bridge, had some bird life for a change.
2F Goosanders were together and a M and F Goosander were keeping separate from them.
Later 3 more F Goosander flew upriver making a total of seven seen in all.

8 Noisy Canada Geese were by the wier.

In the woods by the river there were  a couple of lively Goldcrest.
A Great Spotted Woodpecker called from across the playing fields by the canal. A walk along the canal failed to locate it.
Back by the river another (or the same one) Great Spotted Woodpecker called from nearby but it too kept hidden.
The Woodpecker(s) seemed to call once only, then keep stumn for a good while then call once again.
Very inconsiderate - roll on the drumming.

2 Cormorant flew above the river (or the same one twice).

A livelier day with plenty of birdsong and an enjoyable outing.

Bradshaw - Soil Hill

14:40 - 16:15

A late trip up to Soil Hill this aft, to drop some Nijger Seed and have a look see.
2 Mistle Thrush were on the wires opposite Dan. B's place.
1 Fieldfare was high on a conifer opposite the main Soil Hill Track.
On Soil Hill itself, just Skylarks to be had , for me, today - I counted 6.

Nothing on the NK pond or the shay fields.
Just the resident Wren came to say hello on Ned Hill Track.

Birdcage Lane Area:-

Love 'em or hate 'em ....
