After calling at Asa Nicholson's for lunch, Sue went off to take Emma shopping and I walked home.
A coldish very calm day warming up later
I went up Crag Lane, up Foreside Lane then Zig-Zagged and Zaz-zigged around a few bridleway paths hereabouts, ending up going along the usual bridleway past the ruin to Back Lane and down through Ogden woods.
A heavy shower had me don my Rain Mate and accoutrements.
When all this paraphernalia was in place, the rain decided to pack in and go home!
A couple of circuits of the water then home via Back Lane , Plantation, Coal Lane, Ned Hill Track etc.
Birds:
Crag Lane: 2 Kestrel hunting together.
Foreside Lane: unusually quiet - 2 Pied Wagtail
Black Edge Lane: 4 Red Legged Partridge, Pheasant, Meadow Pipits (but not many).
Halifax Road: c70 Lapwing were circling high over the Shay fields.
Top of the 'South' Bridleway: 4 Stonechat zipping about.
One Stonechat imitating a Kestrel, hovering in mid-air for quite some time.
Track to Ogden: Heron.
Ogden woodland: Many Goldcrest
Passerine Alley: very busy with a good smattering of small birds...
Bullfinch, Long Tailed Tit, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Chaffinch, Blackbird, Robin.
Scanning South from the promenade a heart stopping moment - a bird with a striking white breast sat at the very tip of a tall tree - SHRIKE came immediately to mind.
I managed to get one quick photo before the bird dived for cover.
A Treecreeper!!
I've never seen a Treecreeper so high in a tree before.
The Kingfisher made a brief appearance in the low sluice area before being chased off by a Robin!
The homeward journey was a bit of a slog really with not much birding.
Although I did peep a Little Owl, a few Pheasant and a Moorhen.
A good outing.
School hols coming up so I may be otherwise engaged soon!!
