The usual birding walk this aft on a lovely warm sunny day with a cooling breeze on the hill.
Birds:
A look for the Taylor Lane Little Owl failed but a Wheatear was on the wall here.
(oops - see comments).
Higher up at the Midden and Thresher field a Little Owl sat among the tyres and other broken farm machinery.
Along Ned Hill Track, Herring Gull, 6 Goldfinch, Wren, solitary Meadow Pipit.
Soil Hill had a few interesting moments.
A Skylark flushed from the diagonal path to the hill, without a call.
Moorhen on the lower NK pond.
4 or so Meadow Pipit.
A Skylark sized bird flew calling/singing around the hill then I lost it as it dropped down towards the Thornton traffic lights area.
Its flight and call/song seemed similar to a Sand Martin and it was brown and very light underneath.
(One that got away - a lifer no doubt - they always are).
2nd Skylark flushed, this time a call and a burbling song as it disappeared.
A Snipe flushed from a watery tractor rut by the quarry edge.
A Mallard flushed from the grotty pool along the main track.
Also here a Chaffinch - unusual for here.
A Kestrel was on the pylon wires near the Bonnet hill.
Several Gulls were in the Roper Lane fields a mix of Common and Black Headed with one Lesser Black-backed by the looks of it.
An enjoyable few hours.
Nice Whitchat.......
ReplyDeleteHey up Andy
ReplyDeleteI looked at my 'Wheatear' pic for long enough before deciding between Whinchat or Wheatear!
And... It's a Whinchat.
Many thanks for putting me straight.
A great bird to see from Bradshaw Lane
(The sad thing is I actually DO go to Specsavers).
