A fantastic find by DJS this morning of an Avocet on Mixenden Reservoir.
Fortunately it stayed a while and I managed to call there on our way to Halifax shopping.
Luckily it did not do an "Iceland Gull" on me and I got a few distant photos.
My previous Avocet sightings have always seen the birds wading, this is the 1st time I've seen one swimming and it is a 1st Calderdale sighting for me as well.
A great start to a sunny day.
Soil Hill etc.
Windy up here and cool but it ,warmed up nicely.
Just a walk around Soil Hill Top and a look at the north side tree line.
2 Raven were being mobbed by Crows, over Roper Lane, as I left home.
Taylor Lane was quiet....a few Meadow Pipit and 2 Pied Wagtail.
Others here abouts : Chaffinch, Greenfinch.
The Hill had 3 Skylarks up singing.
2 Meadow Pipit.
2 Partridge sp. flushed, at distance, extremely noisily from the top of the north tree line. Grey Partridge I think?
I pointed the camera and clicked and amazingly got them!
A couple of frog types popped their heads up from a really small pool, but then immediately vanished again.
Very few Gulls today.
Moorhen on NK pond.
Pr. Lapwing giving an aerial display over the "big bog " lower down.
A Curlew called loudly.
Leaving the hill by the main track 3 "dumpy' small birds flew Meadow Pipit style over the hill.
Their 'bobbing' was less steep than Meadow Pipit with no call.
Their tail looked 'large(ish) 'in relation to the body size, triangular and appeared quite dark.
I could not get any colour on them in silhouette.
A garden 'look out' this aft just saw Dunnock, Goldfinch, 2 Greenfinch, Mistle Thrush.
Where was the caterpillar...???
