A lovely warm afternoon and I enjoyed a walk along the canal and a bit of the river from Elland to Brighouse.
A lot less strenuous than the Soil Hill routes.
Lots of bird song on offer and a couple of half decent sightings but no new ticks.
I'm struggling to move off the 100 species on my Calderdale list.
I was hoping for Flycatcher (certainly lots of flies about) but no joy there.
It was pleasing to see Sand Martin entering a hole in the canal wall, where, presumably they are nesting.
A Heron sat on a tree top chatting to two Magpies.
I wondered if the Heron would steal Magpie eggs / young - probably a struggle with the Magpie nest regularly tight in Hawthorn trees.
Then again the Magpie could be partial to a Herons eggs / young.
Another pleasing sight was that of a Kingfisher along the river, very active, flying around.
That active that there could have been 2 birds.
It was seen 4 or 5 times.
Birds:-
4 Grey Wagtail, 2 Pied Wagtail, Mute Swan with 1 Cygnet.
Moorhen, Mallards with lots of Ducklings.
3 maybe 4 Sand Martin, Swallow.
F. Blackcap seen, many singing.
3 Wren (Many singing).
Kingfisher or maybe 2 birds, very active over the river.
Buzzard high and distant.
2 Black Headed Gull, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gull.
2 Heron, c25 Canada Geese.
3 Collard Dove seen in Southowram.
Bradshaw Fields:-
A short walk up the local fields was quite interesting.
Whitethroat, Meadow Pipit, 1 Lapwing.
A Little Owl flushed from a wall along my path.
2 Mistle Thrush and a Fox.
