Mixenden Reservoir / Local Fields

A bit of a struggle this afternoon to find much of interest.

Another day of cold sunshine and cold snow/hail (snail?) Showers.

I had to lighten my wallet a bit today, so I filled the car at Morrison's - it worked - the wallet now fits snugly in my pocket.

On the way home from Morrison's I called at Mixenden Reservoir.

A strong N or NE wind blowing across the water left little room for shelter for any birds on the water here.

This reservoir is a much better location to visit when the wind is from the west.

(I've added the above statement to my ever growing 'Book of Birding Excuses' manual).

There were no Gulls on the water or elsewhere when I arrived - just 3 Canada Geese.

A walk along the west bank was bird-less, on my return though, a Great Crested Grebe broke the pattern, appearing on the water.

Later, scanning the north end from the south end I picked up a second Great Crested Grebe.

Both were diving often with both birds seen together but only once.

They seemed to stay under for ages and pop up a long way from where they started.

Local Fields:

I had my usual  jaunt past the local Crabtree Hall Farm, towards Ned Hill Lane.

This was a poor affair!

A Curlew called and flew towards Soil Hill.

4 Meadow Pipit distant and fidgety, with the usual Crows and Woodpigeon.

A couple of Blackbirds was the nearest I got to Ringo - although I've seen them here in previous years.

No sign of Little Owl in the past 2 days.

2 Birds that I cannot ID below:-

Clutching at straws - Large Gull near Asda this a.m.

More Straws - Seen flying past Wainhouse Tower.
