A few days away to a very windy east coast this week - SW or W winds throughout.
Monday 10/10/22.
On the journey here Red Kite and Buzzard were seen.
Monday afternoon I squeezed in a visit to Thornwick Pools Hide.
Thornwick Pools Bird Hide:
Cool, Windy especially with the direction of the wind into the open viewing flaps of the hide
but nice and sunny.
The sun was really awkward, late afternoon, causing massive glare.
Great to talk with 7 birders (in ones and twos) who came and went during my 2
hours there.
Birds:-
Pied Wagtail, Teal, 2 Tufted Duck, Mallard.
Moorhen.
A Kingfisher (is unusual here) was dropping into the water – washing rather than fishing.
2 Rock Pipit. Small flock of c10 Linnet.
Snipe.
Tuesday 11/10/22.
We had a long walk from Thornwick Bay along the coast to Flamborough Head (Skylark up singing)
and back today.
The wind was not as strong today and another sunny outing even if the west or
south west wind direction was not the best direction to help with birds migrating.
While we were at Flamborough Head we had a short twitch for 2 rare birds, a Barred Warbler
seen recently (but not today) and Yellow Browed Warbler which was seen here today.
We failed to locate either, although we did not hang about for 4 hours to see a
YBW like one birder we spoke to!!
I probably would have waited a lot longer given the choice, but holidays are about
pleasing everyone.
Aren't they?
The 'usual' birds were seen today - with Stonechat a nice find.
2 Weasels were also seen and the usual Seals.
On our way back to the Thornwick Bay caravan site, Sue abandoned me
and headed off, while I spent a cold 2 hours in the bird hide.
A Bittern had dropped in here yesterday at dusk but no sign of it today during my stint
till 16:30.
(Apparently it was watching me and it dropped in again after I'd left).
At least my twitching ability remains exceedingly mediocre!!
Again, as yesterday , several birders came and went - 10 in all, which is always good.
(Some) Birds seen at the hide or nearby:
Tree Sparrow, 2 Snipe, 1 Dunlin.
Loads of Teal.
Pied Wagtail, 2 Grey Wagtail one with a leg ring,
2 Kestrel.
Linnet, Goldfinch, Chaffinch.
