An exciting morning for Calderdale Birders with 3 Pale Bellied Brent Geese found at Fly Flats by B.S.
A great reward for his diligence up here - nice one Brian.
Mother's Day today and Sue and I had agreed on a walk from near Luddenden Foot to Hebden Bridge and back (about on our physical limit these days), with a café break in Hebden Bridge.
No bins or camera today, just my smart phone to rely on and as usual when you ain't got the tackle something interesting turns up.
Along the way Chiffchaff were heard in 3 different locations and a Buzzard was seen.
An unusual Duck was on the canal (near the Moderna Works area) which looked like a Tufted Duck and yet NOT.
Hawk-eyed Sue ruled out any sign of a Tuft and the way the bird was on the water , the size and slightly cautious nature, I am happy that the bird is a Common Scoter.
The photo is very poor alas but I have seen Common Scoter on previous occasions.
After a really nice cafe break by the Cafe on the corner of "The Square" car partk we waked back to the car at Luddenden Foot. Quite cool this afternoon but dry.
Sue was kind enough to take quite a long diversion up through Luddenden Village and up through Jowler to The Crossroads Pub before a left along through Wainstalls and along to Fly Flats.
Fortunately I had my bins and camera in Sue's car.
It was nice to have a very brief chat to Viki who was on the Look-out. She had been up here earlier in the day and soon left as it became quite cold.
After looking across the water, a long way, in the bins it proved pretty useless so I decided to take some random photos.
I soon realised that the huge zoom on my camera was a lot better that my bins and I was really lucky to find the 3 Pale Bellied Brents on the bank nearly opposite me! result!
These Geese were a Calderdale lifer for me.
