Thornwick Bay - Flamborough

Arrived here Sunday 16th April around lunch time.

The campsite has suffered from prolonged wet periods of late and the ground was saturated. Quite a few caravans and motorhomes had been struggling to get some grip and there was extensive damage to the lawned pitches.

The warden told me that it was the wettest March and April , here, that he could remember.

There was a very chilly breeze but it was dry when we arrived.

Luckily we were upgraded to a gravel pitch with a lot of the other bookings for this week  cancelled by the site admin.

This evening I  just managed a short walk along a hedged path that meets the Bempton to Flamborough cliff path.

I did managed to eyeball a couple of Puffins on the sea here.

On Monday we caught the bus to Bridlington to look at the shops and enjoy a long walk up and down the sea front.

A couple of cafĂ© stops and a walk up to Sewerby Hall to catch the bus back ended an enjoyable outing.

No bins or decent camera today but I did eyeball 35 or so Turnstones, half a dozen Redshank an Oystercatcher or three and 2 small Waders (the  2 small Waders were in the harbour and they were too far off to see properly , which was a shame).

Later on Monday I had a walk over to the Thornwick Pool hide and small  nature reserve area.

On previous visits here, there has been a good selection of Waders.

This afternoon however there were no Waders at all with the water levels very very high.

Sand and House Martin were zooming over the water with a few Swallows. A Reed Bunting and 2 Pied Wagtail remained stubbornly distant in the reeds across the water.

The Pied Wagtails were hovering above the water picking insects off the top - can't remember seeing them do this before.

Tuesday morning we awoke to a thick, cold sea fret, a consequence of the east in the wind.

The fog lifted around 11 a.m. and as the sun came out we decided to have a fairly long walk along the coastal path to Flamborough Head via north landing and back.

A breezy walk, cold to start but it warmed up nicely.

On the return journey, (struggling a bit, energy wise now) we called in The Viking Inn at Thornwick Bay, for tea and I've never seen so many prawns on a prawn salad before!!

4 Swan flew over Flamborough Village - I thought Whoopers at the time, but one looked to have a "high forehead" so I am unsure of the species.
