A late Sunday evening birding walk up the local fields was rewarded with the magic sightings of a Redstart species.
11 Mistle Thrush were on the walls in front of me, moving along as I moved along.
I was looking carefully at them hoping for a Wryneck in among,
4 or so Mistle Thrush flushed to a nearby conifer by a house , others moved onto a low wall.
When they moved to another wall , a smaller bird dropped down behind a Mistle Thrush obscured by the wall.
Then all the Thrush flushed and I got a really good sighting of the small birds tail and back.
Red in the rear and a grey back - a definite Redstart.
I had a walk around trying to relocate the bird, then I noticed that the bullocks were on their way, bounding down the field and going through the wall where the bird had been.
I legged it smart-ish to the safety of the next field - now it was dark so no cahnce of finding it!
I've reported it as a Common Redstart but it could be a Black Redstart - I've had both here previously.
