Wells-Next-The-Sea 1st of two blog postings

 Sunday 10th September 2023.

An early start to the day trying to avoid the worst of the heatwave on our way to north Norfolk.
The weather peaked at 31 degrees somewhere near Kings Lynne (named locally as The Car  Park).

We arrived at Wells-next-the-sea's "The Pines" posh caravan park about 2pm.

Monday 11th September 2023.

We rode into Wells-Next-The-Sea  and tied the horses to the harbour railings before catching the Cromer bus as far as Blakeney.

Blakeney has moved up market big style since our last visit here with the little bakery charging £2.50 for a can of diet coke.
The outside hut thingy here also did take away food with the diet coke only £2.00!
(Is it me?).

I think I spend too much time in Frothies CafĂ© at Filey!

Anyway after a bun and a drink we headed off to Wells, walking along the coastal path, although the path does not go near the sea for much of the time.
With the very, very  hot weather and the 8 or so miles to walk I only brought my small camera so the distant photos are poor (even poorer than usual).
This is a shame because there were many distant birds that needed some decent photos to be sure of their ID.

Back at Wells we called at the really excellent friendly , Well Deli , by the harbour car park.

Today was more of a hike than a birding outing ...but......

Some Birds:-

Greenshank, Redshank.
Little Egrets were numerous.
A large contingent of Spoonbills were by a lake , somewhere near Stiffkey.
Curlew and Black Tailed Godwit.
Turnstone, Oystercatcher.
Greylag and Canada Geese and maybe other geese species.
There is also a potential Spotted Redshank and a Whimbrel in the mix but as I said the photos aren't conclusive.
The Whimbrel looks too big also!

(I though I heard Pink Footed Geese late evening calling from somewhere towards Holkam Hall area).
This proved accurate with hundreds seen later on.
Widgeon, Stonechat (but not many?).

Great Black-backed Gull.
Lesser Black-backed Gull.
Herring Gull. Black Headed Gull.

A large Gull that I've ID'd as a 2nd summer Great Black-Gull?
Possible Great White Egret - very poor photo at distance best I could do.

Tuesday 12 September , 2023.

This morning the heat has left Norfolk and todays forecast was a tad more  'Halifax' with some very, very wet stuff on the way.

We decided to risk a real soaking and pedalled to Holkom Hall, had a coffee and a bun, looked at the lake and pedalled back again.

The heavens opened as we got back to the Wells RLNI station  but we made it back to the caravan park only a bit wet.

No birding on this outing , a Nuthatch called along the wooded track.

As we sat reading this aft, the rain bounced down and a very, very
soggy looking Hare bounded past the motor home into the pine trees!

I've taken far too many photos to sort out tonight, including a cracking Grey Plover.
At least the next lot I post (hopefully tomorrow) are with the better camera!

Redshank and 2 Godwit Species?

After having way too many beers, - Popeye orders far too many
mushy peas with his fish and chip supper
and decides to put off the problem till tomorrow.

Stonechat

Black Tailed Godwit.

Lots of Wildfowl - very distant

One of many Spoonbill above.
