East Coast Holiday 28th April - 3rd May

We had a few days away this week, starting on Sunday with an awfully wet journey to Filey. Along the way a shunt had closed the A64 on the west bound (opposite) carriageway to us.

On Tuesday we headed off to Whitby via a visit to Scarborough for 2 nights and on Thursday we went to Cayton Bay for two nights.

Lots of walks and some birding in 'unusually' mixed weather.

Birds:-

Sunday Filey Brigg.

The clay path along Filey Brigg top was a bog, adding 4" to my Hight with the amount of the stuff clinging to the bottom of me boots - boosting ( or booting ) my height to over Five foot tall .

Usual birds for here seen:-

Fulmar, Razorbill, Guillemot, Kittiwake, Herring Gull.

Oystercatcher, Cormorant and poss. Shag.

Reed Bunting and Meadow Pipit on the grass top.

The small pond at the top end of the large Brigg grass car park was disappointing, full to the brim and bereft of birds.

Possible Stint species on the beach below the brigg cliffs - photo's rubbish.

See what you think.

Monday Reighton Sands to Filey beach walk.

A few Swallows and 10 Sandwich Terns in one group. (If they were all in fact Sandwich ones).

The afternoon was plagued by a strong gale, another look at the Brigg Pond revealed nowt and the wind was toooooo strong to walk along the top.

I stood on the beach watching the tide approach - large Gulls and 10 Oystercatcher seen.

A Whimbrel called from Filey Brigg Caravan Park as we were finishing tea... I dashed outside but could not locate the bird so ???? Who knows.

Tuesday - Whitby (Sandsend) Sandfield Caravan Park.

A beautiful drive over the moors to Whitby.

A pricy place but neat beyond belief.

Whitethroat (heard).

Sue spotted a Bar Owl on the site.

Red Legged Partridge called as I sat reading and supping Doom Bar Ale into the evening.

The one and only time it was warm enough to laze about (outside).

Wednesday Whitby - Sandend and back.

Started gloomy mild damp with mist not far away over the sea.

(Late afternoon the cold misty stuff rolled in).

Sandwich Tern.

Red Throated Diver.

Stonechat, Linnet.

Reed Bunting.

Dolphin or maybe Minkie Whale.

One Seal.

Fulmar.

Thursday 2nd May 2024 - Cayton Bay.

A really cold, strong wind greeted us and after tea we had a walk down to the beach from the caravan site, turned tail, and walked straight back again brrrrrr.

No birds - well 2 Linnet seen.

Friday 3rd May 2024 - Cayton Bay.

Cold wind again - NNW.

We caught a bus to Reighton Sands to walk back to Filey.

An interesting walk in a stiff breeze and big waves breaking on the shore.

The tide was just going out and we we were having to judge how to get past the "sticky-out" bits of cliff remains without getting our feet wet.

The angry sea at Filey had one surfer, quite a way out, who made surfing look a doddle - yeah.

Along the walk we sheltered from the rain at the small Hunmanby Gap café.

A good move, the Scone with jam and cream, eaten stood up under the cafe canopy, looking at the breakers,  was really quite enjoyable.

With all this good jock, I'm beginning to look like the "road drawing" of a double mini roundabout, roundabout - all circles and bulges.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I seemed to have deleted a good few photos before copying them to my laptop.

They included the Red Throated Diver and the Dolphin or not oops.

Disappointing,

I do have a poor photo of the RTD on my phone which I have posted.

Birds:-

1 dead Gannet - 4 or 5 Live ones seen far out to sea,

Large Gulls - far our possible included a Great Black-backed Gull.

Not much else see through the sea mist.

Filey:

2 Poor distant photo.
Possible Stint species??
