Cumbria and Lancashire

We had a few days off earlier this week looking for, and finding, some sun.

Sunday 9th October 2016.

First we visited Hellifield Flash, for 5 mins, on the way to Bowness -on-Windermere.

Lots of birds on the flash.

Some that I could ID were:-

Golder Plover, Lapwing, Wigeon, Redshank.

On arrival at Windermere we enjoyed a short walk that revealed a 'problem bird' - possibly Goldcrest but the bird looked too big for Goldcrest - also seen a Song Thrush.

Monday 10th October 2016.

On Monday we had a longer walk.

We walked from Bowness to catch the Hawkshead ferry across Lake Windermere.

From the far side of the lake we picked up the lakeside footpath which we followed for 4 miles or so to High Wray.

A couple of miles of tarmac bashing from High Wray got us to Hawkshead.

Another problem bird - this time a Goose at the Lakeside in Bowness itself.
The bird looked like a Canada Goose but on further inspection it had too much white on its upper parts and pink Legs - not the dark legs of a Canada Goose.

There are so many Geese around this area that I suppose it is a Canada Goose Hybrid.

Other Birds:-

Cormorants, 3 Nuthatch, 6 Buzzard, 5 Goosander, 2 Jay, Masses of Robin, 40 Redwing, Pied Wagtail, Great Spotted Woodpecker calling, 2 Noisy Raven, Hedge Sparrow.

Top of the shop and a tick for me a Marsh Tit.

It was constantly active and a good picture of it was  impossible.
There were at least 2 Marsh Tits hereabouts.

Tuesday 11th October 2016.

Tuesday found us in a small place called Stanah, nr. Thronton-Cleveleys near the Wyre estuary.
We had, for us, a mega bike ride today.

From Stanah we cycled to the new flood defences/promenade at Cleveleys and turned left, intending to cycle to Blackpool.

On-going flood defence work (now nearly complete) has closed the cycle way into Blackpool so we turned around and went the other way.

Further north, more flood defence work pushed us out onto the road for a while but a concessionary , rough, cycle path at Ross (something or another) allowed us to leave the road and we picked up the old concrete cycle way and managed to cycle all the way into Fleetwood.

Along the coast a Wheatear was seen and a solitary Gull - most probably a Black Headed Gull but the bill looked too long and it looked very slender so with the bird books out I got carried away with the hope that it might be a Slender Bill Gull - far from home!!

A look around the Shopping Outlet at Fleetwood was followed with a tough cycle through the busy and not so busy roads to get back to Stanah.

We had a butchers at the Wyre estuary near Stanah where there were 100's of Lapwing and lots of Gulls coming over, to roost I suspect. The birds were very distant alas.

Birds: - Coast

Wheatear, Curlew, Problem Gull, Ringed Plover, Redshank, Cormorant, Shelduck, Oystercatcher.

Birds:- Estuary.

Redshank, 18 Pink Footed Geese, Teal, Curlew, Little Egret, 100's Lapwing, Canada Goose.

Probably a Black Headed Gull - but we live in hope!!

Don't like the look of the Cormorant's dinner

Fleetwood in the distance

Wednesday 12th October 2016.

I had a quick look again at the Wyre estuary this morning before we headed home via Lytham-St-Annes.

There looked to be 100's Golden Plover on the far bank with the Lapwing.
I thought I'd got a picture of a Raven overhead but I've decided that it is in fact a Rook.

Birds:-

Lapwing, Golden Plover, Teal, Rook, Little Egret, Oystercatcher, Redshank, Shelduck.
