We had a run out to Hollingworth Lake this morning.
There were the usual Gulls, Canada Geese and Mallards at the feeding area. Even a Coot was taking the bread on offer.
A lap of the lake was very pleasant in the mostly sunny conditions.
Some of the birds seen:
4 Great Crested Grebe, 4 Tufted Duck, Curlew, Cormorant, Skylark and Pied Wagtail.
The large pond accessed through the farm yard was strangely bereft of anything interesting.
On the way back we called at Sue's sister at Soyland where a Buzzard was calling across the valley.
Sue had some business to attend to at Sowerby Bridge so after some scran in Deli Belge's cafe we went our separate ways.
I went for a walk and Sue promised to pick me up when she was free - her freedom, however, took some getting to.
Sowerby Bridge - Coley 13:30 - 17:45 (ish).
Left to my own devices I though I'd enjoy a leisurely stroll along the canal towards Copley.
I walked along the canal and then picked up the river path all the way into Copley Village. In Copley Village the river path is closed for repair work.
Here I headed through the village and back up to the canal again to continue my stroll to Salterhebble.(15:00).
A Bullfinch and a Cormorant were seen on this section.
The weather was quite warm as I carried on to Elland with one outer layer in the rucksack.
Another Cormorant and a Heron were seen on this section.
Elland Bridge (15:30) came and went as I carried on towards Brookfoot Nature Reserve.
Mute Swan, Cormorant, Long Tailed Tit and Bullfinch were some of the birds seen.
I eventually got to Elland Gravel Pits as was, where the fishing lake is.
9 Cormorant were on the Pylon also seen were 2 Heron, Jay and a Sparrowhawk.
The usual contingent of Canada Geese were near a bend in the river with 5 Goosander.
When I arrived in Brighouse I though of calling it a day and going to Sainsbury's but knowing the tea time traffic would be a nightmare, for Sue, I decided to carry on up the main road towards Hipperholme.
Soon after Hove Edge I was actually moving faster that the cars!!
Sue phoned me as I got near Hipperholme and she eventually caught me up just after the Brown Horse pub at Coley.
Amazingly I walked past the Brown Horse - my local for 14 years - some time back!!
I though I would see lots of airborne Geese and maybe hear a Chiffchaff today, but neither materialised.
I realise that you either hike or bird watch - can't do both with any real success.
Still plenty of air in the lungs today - the Hipperholme stuff not as good as the canal stuff.
Today's childish joke:
What's the difference between Roast Beef and Pea Soup?
Anybody can Roast Beef!
Sowerby Bridge ....
Wow, some walking done there John, well done. Nice pics taken of your journey as well.
ReplyDeleteA mere stroll for a postie like yourself Dave!!
