√Hull and Hornsea

Another week and another poor weather forecast.
With a few days available without any family commitments we zoomed off to the east coast.

A trip to a very, very windy Kingston-upon-Hull on Wednesday was a nice day out.
A look at the Marina and the shops took up most of a busy day.

My first visit to Hornsea Mere was obviously on the cards.
Hornsea, itself, was very quiet as expected on a mid-week out of season visit.

We cycled to the Hornsea Mere cafe and after an enjoyable coffee and bun we had a very, very short walk around the cafe grounds.

Lots of Tufted Duck were silhouetted against the morning sun not easy to see,

A good few Gadwall were here and we were treated to a fly-over of Barnacle Geese.

We cycled further down the Hull road to find the access gate,to the Mere footpath, 100 yds beyond the last bungalow of the right.

The path runs parallel to the water but at a quite distant from it, which was a tad disappointing.

We did see plenty of Wildfowl though.

A few Goldeneye and Great Crested Grebe were a pleasing sight.

Better views here of the many Tufted Duck and Gadwall and I manged to pick out a Wigeon.

Later we cycled down to Hornsea beach area and had a good stroll around.

Just two waders seen – A Redshank and a Purple Sandpiper (picked out by eagle eye Sue, feeding under the Groynes - The Sandpiper was feeding under the Groynes).

The bird did come out into the open and allowed some quite good (in my opinion) photos!

A beautiful Common Gull had me trying to change it itnto a Ringed Bill Gull.

The bird had a damaged leg, but it was competing very well with the Black Headed Gull for food along the beach.

I did think that there would have been more waders here?

On the journey home this morning(Friday), 5 miles North East of North Cave 2 small skein of Pink Footed Geese flew overhead and landed in a field close to the road.
The field they landed in was 'full' of Pinkfeet.

Further along the same road c500 Goldfinch were flitting about on the thistles.
