Redpoll: Bradshaw , Soil Hill, Ogden circular walk

12:30 - 14:45 (dusk).

A calm dullish afternoon and the usual walkabout.

c100 Starlings seen along Taylor Lane.

Soil Hill was very calm and quiet for a change, with not a lot about.
A good count of c20 Meadow Pipit was all I could muster.

From Ned Hill Track a pair of Stonechat was seen on a distant wall.

Ogden Water was gloomy and had the usual mix of Small Gulls with at least one Herring Gull and One Lesser Black Backed Gull.
A Grey Wagtail was in the drainage area.

Sightings of the usual Mallards, and with just 22 Canada Geese on the drink, it was leading to a poor outing.

Going along the west side path c40 birds were feeding high in the Alders.

They were obscured by branches and the light was atrocious.
I believe that there were more than 20 Redpoll in the flock with Goldfinch.

I took a lot of very, very poor photos, hoping for some improvement in the light, but it remained particularly dull.
I've posted a few of the better photos, but they aint great.

The birds were skittish, leaving the trees en-masse and returning, a couple of times, before disappearing from view.

A bit further along the circuit I picked out a couple of Widgeon in with the Mallards - a good bird for Ogden.

A Cormorant was diving constantly near the bread lobbers area and a couple of Pheasant called as I left for home via Boggart Brigg.

Nothing of note seen on the way home.
It was dark when I arrived back at Bradshaw.

  1. A just reward for the time and effort you put in John. Two good species there to brighten up the lull we seem to be going through at the moment.
    Siskin next.
