Super Whooper Day!!

2019 has not been great for me so far, with my 5th visit to Elland hospital since mid-January today.
Things, however, were due to get a whole lot better!

On our way home a text from B.S. notified me of Whoopers on Mixenden Reservoir first seen by DW.
I did not have a camera but we made a slight diversion and you could see the Whoopers with the naked eye from the main road.
I did take a poor picture on my telling bone.

After yesterdays long birding session, Sue was wanting a walk, without birds, today.

We went up to the Raggalds and down through West Scholes to the cycle track. A left here took us along to Thornton Village where we picked up the Bronte Way towards Denholme.
We wound our way across fields to eventually end up at Asa Nicholson's café, Kelham, for coffee ,and a shared slice of fruit cake with Wensleydale cheese - yummy.
Home was via Denholme Gate Road.
A bit pooped when we got in - I thought that was the excitement over.
A phone call from Sue to her sister changed things when she had to dash out to see her at B&Q.
My chance to spy the Whooper's with the camera from a lot nearer than earlier!

It was getting dark when I got there, and knowing my twitching record, I thought they might have gone for the night, but I was in luck,

They really are magic birds to see and seeing them made my day.
Thanks to B.S. for the text and of course the grapevine system.

Also here, Great Spotted Woodpecker, 3 Goosander, F. Goldeneye, Pr. Moorhen, Canada Geese.

  1. Good photos John, glad you got them. I was watching from Fly Flatts this p.m. expecting them to fly over but luckily for you they stayed put.
Well done for making the effort to get back there.
