Brookfoot L.N.R. Canal and River

10:00 - 14:45

A cold, cold day with a biting wind, with a temperature of 1 deg. when I left home.
A tad 'warmer' in Brighouse.
A very quiet morning session, a bit livelier in the afternoon.

A helpful session with JM who gave me some great advice / tips for my camera settings - Many thanks John.

Tough going this morning with JM.
After my butties I had another wander about, and, following a text by AC managed to locate a couple of ticks - Sand Martin and Swallow - my first of the year.

Later still I had an interesting chat with DP who was going in the opposite direction to me, along the canal.

Birds:-

2 Sand Martin and 2 Swallow early on with other hirundinidae high, later.
How do they will find enough food in this very cold weather?

(I may have had a House Martin - by the call - a happy chittering was heard over the lake - but I don't know enough to distinguish House Martin calls from Sand Martin calls
I think the Sand Martin is more raucous).

Very vocal Grey Wagtail, Bullfinch, Chiffchaff, Heron, Canada Goose,
F. Goosander overhead.
Moorhen, Cormorant, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls.
Buzzard, Mallard.

A Kingfisher flew fast from under the banking upstream of the twin bridges before the Weir.
It was gone before I got the camera on it.

A cold day but enjoyable nonetheless.

Bird very distant on the Ski Lake.

The bill looked big enough for a Great Black-backed

This photo, however, shows a grey/black contrast on the wing

Buzzard far away

Swallow - even further away.
Pleased I got this one!!
