Another local birding outing today with dull overcast skies.
The wind increased as the day progressed and was very strong from the South West, reaching 40mph revealed by my 'wet finger in the air' monitor.
Some fields along the Calderdale Way are still quite boggy.
Birds:
9 Fieldfare airborne with speed >S early on was a good sign.
Another 40 or so, were seen a bit later. They too were airborne >S.
At least 3 Bullfinch at the north end of the small copse, always good to see - I hear plenty but see few.
As I backtracked through the copse a few excited bird calls had me look up through the trees to see a Sparrowhawk high above.
A singing Wren.
A single Mistle Thrush in the 'horse field'.
Just a few Gulls about today.
Groups of Starling with c100 in total seen.
6 Moorhen and a few Mallard by the park farm pond.
c30 Goldfinch, calling, in the park bushes.
Pr. Collared Dove.
A large black diving type, over the park, which I hoped was not a Cormorant soon became one as it got nearer!.
A quick look at the farm track above Bradshaw Hall for the Little Owl nearly had me beat, but I did eyeball one at distance sheltering behind a field wall, out of the strong wind.
A pr. Partridge flushed and soon disappeared over a wall.
A second Sparrowhawk, first high then low, along the hillside.
I tracked it through the bins, it's brown plumage blending in with background of the hill, making it nearly invisible.
It landed at distance in trees.
An enjoyable outing and some good birds to keep the interest going today.
Pr. Partridge in here somewhere - but I cannot find them.
Sparrowhawk - best I could do!
