Soil Hill(North), Bridleways Nearby

A birding walk from Denholme Velvets car park along Thornton Rd to check out the lower reaches of Soil Hill was followed by a walk up the bridleway to the abattoir ruin nr. Back Lane, Ogden and then a short circular route up Foreside Lane, across to 'Blackwall Lane' (I think its called) and back to the car.

A sharp, cold n/nw wind was present throughout, not helping, but it was dry and sunny.

Soil Hill Area:

c10 Lapwing, 4 Curlew, 2 Pied Wagtail over.

Meadow Pipit and a large flock of very mobile Starlings was all I could muster.

Elsewhere:

c10 Lapwing, 4 Curlew, 4 Meadow Pipit.

Little Owl (calling not seen).

2 Pheasant, 2 Stock Dove.

A Snipe flushed silently rising without any zig-zag to land again within 100 yds.

The 'colour' contrasts seem quite 'vivid' if that makes sense!

(Probably flushed too soon to be a Jack Snipe though).

I was hoping for Wheatear, with some sightings reported on the grapevine today, but I'll have to wait a bit yet!

A large helping of frog spawn was present in the bog of  'big bog' field in very little water.
