An odd sort of morning in Bradshaw with mist and low cloud then some blue sky - just enough to make a Dutchman's britches - then the mist intensified making it quite grotty.
I did get a fly over of a calling Raven though.
I mentioned, to Sue, that there had been sightings of three Hawfinch (BOG Website - link is on this blog as Bradford Birders Group below, right) at the usual church yard in Ilkley and we decided to have the day out at Ilkley and have a try for the Hawfinch as part of it.
A lousy journey, with a 40 minutes delay getting through Silsden with 3 way lights at some road works. By the time we realised the length of the delay it was too late to do much about it.
It was lunchtime by the time we got to Ilkley and we enjoyed our usual nosh in the Riverside Hotel before having a walk along the river to the church yard.
We had an hour or so walk around around the place, meeting 4 other birders in among.
None, of which had had a decent sighting of the Hawfinch.
One birder said that he had heard one call but failed to see it 'properly'.
The walk back on the other side of the river was bathed in sunshine quite pleasant.
Birds:
Nothing special in the church yard and the river was unusually quiet bird wise with many dogs, dog walkers and other pedestrians out enjoying the sun.
There were 6 or so fishermen wading in the river along the way as well - boo-hoo (twice).
2 Mistle Thrush, a few Blackbirds and the usual Mallards and Black Headed Gull was about all.
A calling Wagtail passed, unseen.
I took a speculative photograph of some Mallards that were miles off where the river bends out of sight - By some spooky coincidence, looking at the colour of the birds feet, I seem to have caught a Little Egret in flight!! Unless I'm loosing the plot of course.
See what you think.
A Kestrel was on the wires at Dick Hudsons.
'Hundreds" of Gulls > west over Denholme as we passed through.
Whooper Swan (yesterday).
I noticed that a Bewick's Swan was reported by the Oxenhope Watch birders.
All I can add about my bird was that it issued a single note, mournful call, repeated probably 5 times as it passed by me.
