Ogden Redstart Dip

We have had a few days holiday this week - no birding.

Today we took Emma to the dentist and afterwards we had lunch in Wetherspoons Sowerby Bridge.

While dropping Emma off at White Windows care home I got my first Swift of 2022 with a couple flying over the buildings there.

Mid afternoon and with a belly full of curry, poppadums and naan bread I though I'd better walk some of it off.

I had a try for NK/DJS's Common Redstart at Ogden.

DJS gave me some detailed info of the area north of the small car park and I loitered with intent for maybe an hour or so.

Lots of bird song, most recognisable some not - one that might have been the Redstart.

The bird  in question was a long way off so the recording of the song is not as loud as you would expect from a Redstart - have a listen (if it is audible via Blogger).

Probably a Chaffinch!

I have seen Redstart before but not often and usually at Bolton Abbey.

I don't think I've been put on this earth to twitch.

After a while I left to do a circuit of the water, returning via the path from the reservoir to the new metal kissing gate (the area near to the original sighting).

Half way up I did get a half chance with a bird high in the canopy moving.

Opted for the camera, and got it in the EVF and as I pressed the shutter the bird flew off - G.R.E.A.T!!

The bird had a buff underbelly and grey wings and was not a Nuthatch but the tail looked too small for a Redstart - no call / song so.... Boo Hoo times 2.

Around the circuit I bumped into a French ornithologist who told me that he had twin girls.

The first girl he named RenĂ©e and the second girl he named Wren B.

(Well it beats the Fireman twins joke)

We had an unusual experience on our way through Wyke on our way home from holiday.

A small truck was removing the temporary traffic lights from road works there.

The driver had put one set of lights on the back of his truck, with the light facing the traffic behind him.

Then he began to very crawl slowly to pick up the second set.

However the first set on the truck were still working and were shining a RED light from the truck.

The car immediately behind the truck refused to overtake it and go through a Red Light - as if!

Birds:-

Usual species including.

Blackcap, Tufted Duck, Stock Dove, Linnet with nesting material.
