A dark-ish, drizzly-ish, breezy-ish sort of day with sporadic yuk moving through.
I got free earlier than I thought this morning so I opted for a walk across the fields and through Crabtree Hall farm to Ogden.
I did a couple of laps of the water today - out and about for 3 hours.
I was hoping to find DJS's Shoveler Duck seen here yesterday but to be honest I did not hold out much hope,
Shoveler is a scarce bird for Calderdale and it was probably moving through, plus with the potential disturbance with the school holidays the chances of it staying long, were poor.
Anyway, I did not locate it but, who knows it could be asleep and reappear??
The first circuit, people wise, was ok. It got a bit busier later.
Finding anything on my first circuit of the water was a bit of a struggle but things improved, slightly on my second.
Birds:-
Bradshaw Area:
1 Fieldfare.
3 Stock Dove.
1 Little Owl.
Herring Gulls > West as I neared home.
One of the Gulls seemed to have an 'odd' call.
I've compared the wing pattern from one of the Gulls to that of
a YLG Wing pattern (from the inter-web) and .... I am non the wiser!!!
See what you think?
c50 Small Gulls mostly Common Gulls.
Ogden Area:
2 Nuthatch (Heard).
A Tawny Owl called once from the NE side.
A good few Goldcrests flitting about, nearly impossible to photograph.
2 Teal (miles off on the west side while I was on the east side - when I got to the east side I couldn't find them!!).
c40 Small Gulls with 2 Herring Gulls at one point.
Treecreeper.
Kestrel.
Greenfinch.
2 Raven distant in the gloom.
Some good exercise today , I'll have to wait a bit longer for my 1st Calderdale Shoveler.
I hope it's an Ogden bird.
Hi the gull you photographed is a Herring. You'll see the YLG has a thick black band across primary 5, counting inwards from outermost primary p10. P5 on yours doesn't have the black band. Though it's hard to count primaries on yours as they're not totally spread and one has a split tip.
ReplyDeleteI was clutching at straws a bit. Gulls are difficult but I give it a go.
ReplyDeleteOne day the penny will drop. Good photos would help but you have to take whats on offer on the day!! Many thanks for the info. I'll try and bear that in mind next time. John
